Quality Cedar Fence Materials to Elevate Your Space

We Sell Only the Best Cedar Fence Boards, Pre-built Fence Panels and Split Rail Fencing

Adding a cedar fence to your yard can serve many purposes. Some are designed for privacy, like pre-built fence panels. Others are to define property boundaries, such as a split rail fence. More traditional fence styles can also be installed for any other purpose you may need like keeping critters in/out or simply elevating the look of your yard. Different styles of cedar fencing can add to the look of your home and enhance the overall aesthetic. Cost and ease-of-installation can be deciding factors as well.

Using Western Red Cedar fence boards allows you to eliminate worrying about rot, insects, and other issues related to moisture. Additionally, when maintained properly, a cedar fence can last upwards of 20 years! Read below about some of our most popular fencing types and styles. Your Custom Designed Cedar Fence

Most fences consist of three basic elements: post, rails and infill material. Posts run vertically and create each “section” of the fence line. Rails run horizontally between each post and are supported by the posts. You typically find them at the top and bottom of each section. If using cedar, your fence boards can be placed in contact with the ground as they are naturally resistant to moisture and rot.

The infill is where you have a little more room to play around with your design. Fence boards can be installed vertically or horizontally, can have flat tops or ones with shapes such as pointed or dogeared, and can be laid in various patterns. In addition, when installing the infill, you’ll also want to take into account the purpose of the fence. Do you want to have full view of the other side of the fence, or just partial? Maybe you want complete privacy instead? Will both sides of the fence match, or is one meant to be the “prettier” side?

You’ll also need to consider finishing touches on your fence such as post caps and stain. Post caps come in multiple sizes and materials and can also include solar or LED lighting.

Pre-Built Cedar Fence Panels

Privacy fences and walls make a great choice when you live on a busy street or find yourself surrounded by nosy neighbors. Use Pre-Built Cedar Fence Panels if you’re short on time and need an easier install! Stain or paint your cedar panels to match your homes aesthetic.

Homeowners often choose to install pre-built fence panels instead of constructing their entire fence from scratch due to convenience. Installation typically involves fewer steps and can often be done in just a few days. It’s important to note, fence posts will still need to be installed between each panel. Reducing the steps needed to install can also be the difference between needing to hire a professional to do the installation or being able to do it yourself, potentially saving you money in the long run.

We source our cedar fence panels from Fraserview Cedar Products out of British Columbia. Pre-Built Cedar Fence Panels use three Western Red Cedar 2″ x 4″ back rails for maximum stability and durability. They also use 1×6 pickets with “no-hole” to eliminate any warp. Pre-Built Cedar Fence Panels with Black Metal Accents

Pairing the natural tones of cedar with black metal accents has become a popular trend over the last few years. Recently, Fraserview has released a new line of pre-built fence panels with black metal accent designs for customers looking to build a modern, yet classic looking fence. Each fence panel is constructed using the same 2″ x 4″ back rails as the solid cedar fence panels and comes in 6′ x 8′ sections in 3 different styles: Diagonal lattice wire mesh top, square lattice wire mesh top, and solid black corrugated 26 gauge metal.

Create a Rustic Feel with a Split Rail Fence

While it does not add much security, building a Cedar split rail fence is a great way to define property lines. Due to its simple design, a split rail fence is easy to install on uneven terrain. The rustic look of split rail fits right in in the countryside but can also act as a statement piece in your neighborhood. Adding a split rail fence is a great idea if you’re trying to define a space but don’t want to completely lose visual on the other side of it either (think garden or street views.) Wire panels can be added to one side of the fence if keeping smaller critters in/out of the area is a concern.

Split Rail fencing is an extremely low-maintenance option since it is naturally resistant to rot, insects, and moisture. Over time the rails will fade to a silver-gray color due to UV rays from the sun, adding to their more “rustic” look. Staining or sealing a split rail fence is more difficult than other styles of fencing due to the rough exterior of the rails and posts, so many customers choose to just let nature take its course.

At Sound Cedar Lumber we carry multiple styles of Split rail including 2-hole, 3-hole and no-hole posts. Standard rails are available in 8′ and 10′ lengths, Jumbo rails in 10′ and No-hole rails in 10′ lengths.

Maintaining Your Fence

Whether you choose a split rail fence, use pre-built fence panels, or build your own traditional fence, maintenance will come into play. Fortunately, Western Red Cedar is easy to maintain due to cedars natural resistance to rot, decay and insects. For the least amount of maintenance – just leave it. Over time, UV rays from the sun will cause the golden tone of Western Red Cedar to fade to a silver hue. If you like the color, great! We recommend cleaning your fence boards once a year to remove dirt and mildew and avoid discoloration.

If you like the natural color of cedar, or want it a different hue, you will need to seal and stain your fence. Clear sealants are available from many stain companies; however, this will only add extra protection from moisture and will not protect from UV rays. Eventually, it will fade to silver like untreated cedar. Applying a tinted stain to your fence boards will protect them from the elements, including UV rays and give you more time to enjoy the color of your fence.

These stains are not permanent, however, and need to be redone every year or two depending on the conditions it is exposed to and the look you want to maintain. When you’re ready to re-stain, simply clean your materials according to the instructions of the stain you’re wanting to apply and add your stain.

Trying to decide which stain to choose? We stock 4 different brands at Sound Cedar and our sales crew can help you choose which stain is the right for your project:
